On the Drawing Board

I decided to pull out the old paints and fiddle around with a technique I am unaccustomed to. Wet in wet oils are a far cry from the glazing technique I use. This was good to get a handle on some real paint after so much digital work. I already have another two boards primed and ready to go!

Random Sketches

Here are a couple of drawings I did today while in the doctor's office with my five year old. It kept us both amused and occupied while we waited. He joined in for a Batman piece that he has absconded with so, no--I don't have it available to post.

I was trying to work out some kind of horse-faced demon dude. The one below I did on the L train and drew quite a few concerned stares. I'd like to work this character up for a painting, but I started to think too much and began to develop some story lines.

John McCain

After the response I received from my drawing of Barack Obama, I decided on equal time for the opposition. Here is my rendition of John McCain. I had intended to execute this as a drawing as well, but scrapped that idea for some color and brushstrokes! This print is also available at Fine Art America.

The Soviet Clique

Dictionary.com defines a clique as a small exclusive group of friends or associates. I immediately thought of this piece (painted while there were still Soviet generals!). This is mixed media on watercolor paper. I had lots of fun working on this. Hence my submission to the Illustration Friday challenge for the week!

Doctor's Office Sketch

This is a repost from the old blog. I found the actual drawing under a pile of papers a few days ago and realized "Hey-I kinda like this..."

Young Student Art

I have been teaching a small group of children on Wednesday evenings at the Central Presbyterian Church. This is just some of the work they have produced. Their names and ages are on most of the drawings. It was lots of fun working with them and learning about what they enjoy drawing!

Pet Peeves / Anger Management

John McCain's temper is well known among the media and political community. In some instances he's been peeved by answering certain questions. For some time now I thought that it would make a good image to juxtapose McCain with the Incredible Hulk. After all, Bill Bixby made the famous quote as David Banner: "You won't like me when I'm angry....". This was sort of a veiled threat to viewers who eagerly anticipated Lou Ferrigno running around with green paint and torn purple pants (Yes, I was one of them!!!)

So here is John 'You Won't Like Me When I'm Angry' McCain!

For a report on the Senator's anger issues you can check out Crooks and Liars.

Been a while since I posted so here's a vague concept sketch.

Multiple

Whenever I take part in Illustration Friday I always try to think about the topic in an oblique manner. With this week's topic of "Multiple" I decided to play with the word and wound up with 'Infinity'. Now that was as close as I could come without drawing multiple images or Maddroxx the Multiple Man! So this character has a pseudo infinity symbol on his forehead. That's my take!

Black History Month

February is almost over, but I had the honor of working on a poster for McDonald's to celebrate Black History month. I created the backdrop which was also used in the program for the event at the Apollo Theatre. The poster is available in McDonald's restaurants and honors Broadcast Legends. I had a great time meeting and talking to so many of the reporters that I grew up watching and continue to watch now.

McDonald's Starving Artist Ad

Here is the print version of the piece I did for McDonald's that is running in the Northeast market this quarter. I was glad to get my name in the ad and it was really cool to take part in the campaign.

Obama Sketch

Well I have returned to Blogger. I'll start from scratch with my sketch of Presidential hopeful Barack Obama. I was going for a Bernie Fuchs look with the drawing. This piece is available as a print for any interested parties.
